No Compromise Air-Cooled Chillers

As any engineer worth their salt will tell you, selecting the right piece of equipment can make all the difference between a successful job and a disaster. It is the role of a specifying engineer to understand how to balance the pros and cons of the hundreds (if not thousands) of different HVAC products available on the market today against the requirements of the project to ensure that the best possible equipment is selected and properly implemented.

In the past, the decision to specify an air-cooled chiller came with the expectation of compromise, where simplicity of design and maintenance were traded for a cut in performance and efficiency. This isn’t the case anymore. Johnson Control’s YORK YVAA air-cooled screw compressor with Variable Speed Drive (VSD) provides a far better balance by combining the best of both worlds: a high performance design that minimizes the total cost of ownership. It’s no surprise that they accomplished this small feat – Johnson Controls invented the electronic Variable-Speed Drive (VSD) for water chillers in 1979, and was the first to introduce an air-cooled VSD screw chiller back in 2004.

They also didn’t forget that the flexibility and choice are important to designers. The components of each YVAA chiller are specifically chosen to meet the individual building load and energy requirements. A wide variety of standard heat exchangers and pass arrangements are available to provide the best possible match.

Since the vast majority of its operating hours are spent at off-design conditions, a chiller should be chosen not only to meet the full load design, but also for its ability to perform efficiently at lower loads. The YVAA series’s flexible energy consumption can deliver an astounding Integrated Part Load Value (IPLV) up to 19.8 EER. As a result these chillers are the most efficient air-cooled chillers Johnson Controls has ever produced and feature the industry’s highest EER at both design and off-design conditions.

Thanks to the Variable-Speed Drive and a high power factor, the YVAA chiller can be tailored and tuned to hit specific targets for state, municipal, or utility rebates. It can be easily tuned to meet the sound requirements of your project’s neighborhood, and features the SilentNight feature, which works with a Building Automation System or programmable controller to load-limit the chiller when noise reduction is a priority. This allows your design to comply automatically with neighborhood sound regulations at specific times of day.

Falling Film Evaporator

YVAA chillers use direct drive, semi-hermetic, rotary twin-screw type compressor and a continuous function, microprocessor controlled  VSD to provide valve-less, smooth capacity control from 100% down to 10% of chiller capacity. By eliminating the slide valve and associated unloading components, the YVAA series uses 50% less moving parts in the compressor.

The evaporator is a shell and tube, hybrid falling film type heat exchanger. It contains a balance of flooded and falling film technology to optimize efficiency, minimize refrigerant charge, and maintain reliable control. A specifically designed distribution system provides uniform refrigerant flow for optimum performance. The YVAA series introduces micro-channel coil to the York screw compressor chiller line. The micro-channel maximizes condenser heat transfer, resulting in a smaller footprint, and reduces refrigerant charge by as much as 50%.

The YVAA series are a game-changer for air-cooled chillers. They can lower your project’s annual energy costs while providing an unprecedented level of design and efficiency flexibility. To learn more about Johnson Control’s YVAA series please click here or contact us!
